大本山永平寺の石柱２本の意味を英語に訳すと・・・The meaning of two stone pillars in Eiheiji temple
曹洞宗の大本山永平寺の入り口には、２本の石柱が立っております。
写真では少し読みにくいですが、
向かって右の石柱には、「杓底一残水」（しゃくてい の いちざんすい）
向かって左の柱には、「汲流千億人」（ながれをくむ せんおくにん）
と書いてあります。
英語に直しますと、
One drop of water in the bottom of the dipper
One hundred billion people dip into the stream
これは、永平寺を開いた道元禅師が、柄杓（ひしゃく）の底に残ったわずかな水にも法を説き、その辺に捨てず、谷川へ戻したという故事にちなんでいるそうです。
Dogen Zenji, the founder of Eiheiji temple, preached a sermon to a drop of water in the bottom of his dipper before returning it to the mountain stream.
Words in a pair of stone pillars are asscociated with this anecdote.
